Director of Diversity and Inclusion

The Director of Diversity and Inclusion reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and is responsible
for the overall functioning of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and coordination of efforts related
to advancing inclusion and cultural competency in collaboration with all campus departments.
Management of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion includes budget oversight; hiring, supervising and
evaluating full-time and student staff; and the development and implementation of programs and
services for under-served/under represented student populations. Through various programming
efforts, the Center advocates a pluralistic and integrated university environment by fostering
understanding and cultural competence among University entities.
Coordination of efforts related to advancing inclusion and cultural competency, in collaboration with all
campus departments, includes serving as a resource regarding equity, diversity and inclusion efforts and
training. This may involve identifying internal and external training facilitators and awareness programs,
as well as implementing training and awareness programs as appropriate. Through a strategic planning
process, the University is currently reimagining its commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence with
clear metrics and accountability. The Director will play an integral role in the implementation and
monitoring of the plan that results from this process.
The Center for Diversity and Inclusion collaborates with the Office of Admission in regard to the
recruitment of students of diverse backgrounds, collaborates with the Director of Retention and the
Center for Academic Excellence to support and assist students in their transition from high-school to
Truman State University, and with other departments who support the success of all students.
Ultimately, the Director is responsible for overseeing the achievement of the mission of the Center for
Diversity and Inclusion which is as follows:
The Center for Diversity and Inclusion serves the Truman State University Community by supporting
diverse groups academically, emotionally, and socially. We are grounded in inclusive excellence that
invites the campus to engage academically and socially with identity development, intersectionality,
inter-group relations and justice in order to develop a consciousness for the common good at Truman
State University and the global community. We do this by:
- Fostering an environment of inclusion and equity to bridge intercultural gaps and inequities.
- Provide opportunities for academic and cultural enrichment through our campus and collegial
- Develop cultural competencies/proficiencies through multiple opportunities to attend
workshops and seminars.
- Overall advocacy for students to ensure they are prepared to be global citizens and life-long
- Providing leadership in educating the campus on diversity, inclusion, social justice, and equity
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serves as an advocate for issues of diversity and inclusion in regard to policy and procedure, as
well as programming efforts coordinated by various departments across campus for under-
served/under represented student populations
• Provides support to Truman State University's under-served/under represented student
populations by offering leadership, input and collaboration of the development of programs
which focus on academic success and/or racial and ethnic issues.
• Provides support to other marginalized student populations at Truman State University by role
modeling and engaging the campus in regard to inclusion as it pertains to gender identity,
religious or spiritual diversity, intersecting identities and other populations.
• Offers, in collaboration with other campus departments, academic and personal advising that
supports the academic and personal success of under-served/under represented populations.
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships (partnerships) with students, the campus
community, and when required, community groups regarding issues of racial and cultural
• Provides general support for multicultural student organizations and coordinates specific
diversity programs, and advocates for the enculturation of inclusion across the curriculum, first
year student programs such as Orientation and Truman Week, and throughout all aspects of the

Scholars Program to ensure the needs of students of color are met through participation in the
• Collaborates with the Academic Professional Development Center (APDC) to establish programs
designed to broaden the repertoire of inclusive pedagogy and teaching practices at Truman.
• Organizes and implements programs for all under-served/under represented student
populations that provide opportunity for community building, networking, understanding of
campus resources, and meets each students' academic needs based on their level of academic

- Earned Master's degree;
- Five or more years of progressively responsible full-time experience related to training,
programming and/or mentoring students with various racial, gender and religious identities;
- Must possess a strong commitment to the development, welfare, and empowerment of

institutional cultural change;
- Demonstrated ability to utilize data and analytics to measure diversity efforts at the student,
Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and institutional level.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and also in collaborative, team environments;
- Working knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management.
- Earned doctorate degree;
- Experience working at an institution of liberal arts;
- Demonstrated experience with budget development, management and fiscal accountability;
- Direct experience supervising full-time staff members;
- Experience in grant writing and management of grant funded projects.
