Job Description
The Senior Associate Director of Philanthropy (SADoP) is an integral member of the Philanthropy Tri-State Hub, which includes New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. This position performs in a leadership capacity and reports directly, and works closely with, the Senior Director of Philanthropy in New York. Primary responsibilities include the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy utilizing all methods traditional and new to increase fundraising support, and reach budgeted goals to support National Programs and The Trust for Public Lands New York State Office. The SADoP for New York will also provide philanthropy assistance as needed to the Tri-State field offices.

The position is responsible for maintaining, cultivating and soliciting a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors that can make gifts in the range of $25,000+. The SADoP is expected to raise $500,000+ annually to support New York programs and $250,000+ to support National and other state programs.

The SADoP of New York should be an entrepreneurial and results-oriented individual who is self-motivated, committed to working at the highest level of quality, able to work both independently and in collaboration, manage multiple priorities, and thrive within a fast pace, results-oriented office. The ideal candidate will have a knowledge and extensive experience working with philanthropic community in New York City, and a track record of securing five to six figure gifts. Candidates must have experience working with high capacity donors, board volunteers, and gala fundraising, and be adept in working with philanthropy and programmatic leadership throughout the organization.

Responsibilities for the position include:
  • Identify potential individual donors, develop cultivation and solicitation plans, implement and maintain donor tracking system, make direct solicitations, close gifts, write and develop proposals and case statements, and coordinate and implement major donor recognition.
  • Serve as philanthropy leader in executing the fundraising strategy of The Trust for Public Lands annual gala in New York and other donor-oriented special events.
  • Work closely with volunteer leadership, the New York State Director and The trust for Public Land Senior Leadership to identify gift opportunities, create donor strategies, and close major gifts.
Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of fundraising experience, including individual and direct major gift solicitations.
  • Keen fundraising strategist who can engage existing donors, engage new prospects, and foster relationships with key program leaders.
  • Demonstrated success developing and sustaining relationships with key supporters and volunteer leadership
  • Exceptional ability to organize and motivate others, including The Trust for Public Land staff, peers, and volunteers as well as experience training and mentoring other philanthropy staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques
  • Self-motivated and an ability to multi-task with excellent attention to detail and deadlines; and can perform successfully without regular supervision
  • Outstanding organizational and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Experience writing effective and compelling donor communication materials, including strategies, presentations and/or newsletters
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent required
  • Experience in a land conservation/park development organization a plus.
  • Knowledge of and experience with New York philanthropic communities.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and a willingness to travel approximately 15% of the time.
