The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), an initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, draws on lessons from tobacco control and other public health advocacy campaigns in more than 50 countries to drive policy change campaigns around the globe to improve health. The Associate Director (AD) of Communications will join a dynamic and growing team advancing efforts to support non-governmental organization (NGO) partners working to improve critical road safety public health policies in specific low-and middle-income countries. The AD will support the execution of key programmatic efforts and policy change initiatives in close collaboration with the road safety program's communications director, GHAI road safety staff and global program partners.
The AD will work in partnership with civil society organizations and multilateral organizations to advocate for policy change and engage in regulatory reforms that aim to improve road safety in low-and middle-income countries. The AD must demonstrate a well-developed understanding of how media advocacy contributes to strategic advocacy campaigns that lead to policy and regulatory change in-country, be a self-starter with strong project management skills and the ability to work within cross-functional teams, and have a demonstrated commitment to media training and capacity building in a global context.
The Associate Director of Communications will report to and work closely with the Director of Communications, Road Safety. They will work in close collaboration with the communications team, the GHAI road safety team, other GHAI staff and partners to help civil society groups develop communications programs in support of public health policy objectives in selected countries.
This GHAI program is part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety, which - after 12 years of success - is expanding to save up to 60,000 lives and prevent 200 million injuries worldwide by 2025.
Key areas of focus for the position include:
- Build relationships with civil society organizations to understand the context and communications needs of each coalition and organization
- Support integrated advocacy communications and media strategies that enhance the work of in-country road safety coalitions by sharing strategic guidance and building organizational communications capacity
- Serve as a communications thought partner to 3-4 country teams, supporting and sometimes leading communication strategies to align coalition efforts through a broader strategic framework
- In partnership with in-country NGOs, develop and implement methods to increase the capacity of the media in priority countries to report on road safety policy, including journalism workshops, fellowships and other mechanisms
- Collaborate with GHAI and other relevant partners to efficiently and creatively craft and implement media strategies in support of GHAI's and local NGO's objectives;
- Oversee production of key communication materials
- Oversee relationships with and output of communications agencies and consultants, including PR agencies and media monitoring vendors in countries
- Evaluate the country-specific communications and media advocacy programs
- Highlight the work of coalition partners through regular contributions to the GHAI blog, social media channels and newsletters
The Associate Director supports organizations in multiple countries to influence and strengthen public health policies related to road safety. The AD should be experienced in the use of communications to advocate for policy change and implementation, as well as experienced in building the capacity and supporting others to successfully utilize communications as a component of policy advocacy campaigns. Experiences include:
- Broad client-services experience in the field of public relations, public affairs, public policy and/or particular experience serving NGO clients in the public health arena.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement media (including social media) and communications strategies, including drafting key messages, in support of policy change in low-and middle-income countries
- Excellent writing, speaking and editing skills (English);
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement media and communications strategies with measurable results
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience
- Experience working at the international level and in cross-cultural settings.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in fast-paced environment
- Ability and desire to travel overseas periodically
- Bachelor's Degree required
- Fluency in written and spoken languages in addition to English is preferred, though not required
