Programme Manager - Curriculum, Qualifications and Assessment

Our client's Education Policy team seeks an enthusiastic Programme Manager to help them maximise their impact on curriculum, qualifications and assessments in chemistry in the UK and Ireland. This is a fixed-term opportunity until the end of 2020, covering an internal secondment.

About the role:

As the client's Programme Manager for Curriculum, Qualifications and Assessment, you will lead a small team working on a range of projects relating to learning from primary to undergraduate level, including technical education. You will aim to make sure orecommendations on chemistry curriculum and assessment reach and influence decision-makers and other stakeholders. Our client's policy positions and recommendations must be based on evidence and views from the community, and so you will oversee activities to ensure this, which may include commissioning research. You will be able to communicate the work and its impact to colleagues, members and policy audiences.

This is an exciting time for this programme. They have a long-standing project to develop recommendations for chemistry curriculum from primary to post-16, and are introducing this work to an increasingly wider audience. Other work on technical and vocational qualifications, and on curriculum at degree level, is in earlier stages of development. They also actively monitor and respond to developments in the education landscape, such as government consultations and curriculum reforms.

The Programme Manager, Curriculum, Qualifications and Assessment currently has three line reports, with responsibility for setting and managing budgets. Team members are based in both Cambridge and London offices; and you can be based in either location, travelling regularly between the offices to meet team members and others. Further travel will occasionally be required to other parts of the UK and Ireland and work may occasionally be required during non-core hours or on weekends. They can therefore accommodate some flexibility in working hours, as long as you are able to maintain the requirements of the role and a 35-hour working week.

About you:

- A degree in chemistry or a related subject; or demonstrable understanding of chemistry that will support oversight of chemistry curriculum development to degree level.
- Knowledge of education systems, policy and practise in the UK.
- Ability to pitch a message to an audience (verbally and in writing), and communicate complex ideas on various levels.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a complex environment, as a member of diverse cross-functional teams.
- Proven ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships, developing networks and creating opportunities with tact and diplomacy.
- Experience of managing and delivering complex programmes of activities, demonstrating planning, prioritisation, critical judgement and composure under pressure.
- Ability to generate and critically evaluate ideas.

Desirable knowledge and skills:

- An awareness of international education systems and policy.
- Experience in policy communications, or other setting involving communicating to influence.
- Experience in a setting relating to chemistry education, for example as a teacher, curriculum developer or in assessment.
- Budget and line management experience.
